Mission Codename Wild Turkey on the loose!
The Sonoma Valley is a gold mine of the most sacred vineyard sites for Zinfandel in California. Wineries like Ravenswood and St.Francis in a way single handedly exposed the country to the powerful old vine Zins of Northern California’s other great wine producing Valley. Hughes Family is one of those classic examples of a small scale Sonoma Valley grower-producer who makes killer wines… that few have ever heard of, or tasted. It’s a locals type winery. A beautiful organic vineyard in the Glen Ellen hills, coupled with a top-notch winemaker in Rolando Herrera (Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars, Paul Hobbs) results in an estate Zinfandel that hangs with the aforementioned big boys of Zin.
Some favorable local press:
“Here’s a full-throttle Zinfandel that goes right to the edge, but sits there enjoying the view rather than diving into the jam pool. The acid profile makes this wine dance on the palate, showing rich brambly fruit, cigar and fall spice balanced by notes of citrus. The tannin structure coupled with the fruit load bodes well for a long future.” A Platinum award-winner at the 2014 Sommelier Challenge 94pts Rich Cook (Sep 23, 2014)
