Mission Codename Second to none
“Seavey is one of the great, unheralded, under-the-radar terroirs in all of Napa Valley…Bill and Mary were visionaries with regard to what could be achieved on these dry-farmed hillside vineyards tucked away in Conn Valley, east of the Meadowood Resort.” - Robert Parker, Jr.
We sound like a broken record, but this marks YET ANOTHER chest pumping, wicked proud first for us. SEAVEY! We’re beyond thrilled to drop this gem today, at the best price you’ll find anywhere…by a long shot!
Plenty of producers make a “second” wine to offer alongside their flagship, but Caravina is at the top of its class, “one of the very best values in Napa Valley Cabernet” as Galloni once said. Seavey holds court up on Conn Valley rd, near Lake Hennessey in the northern part of the valley. From their nearly 40 acres of planted hillside vineyards they’ve been making around 3,000 cases of outstanding quality wine since the early 1990’s.
No doubt, having Philippe Melka on board helps coax the very best out of their grapes. The Bordeaux-born winemaker has made SOO many high scoring, crazy delicious wines for dozens of top labels. In fact, Seavey was one of his first gigs ever, and he set the bar high from the onset.
Think powerful, old school Napa Cabernet, similar to Dunn or Mayacamas. Where the Estate Cabernet needs time to come into its own, the Caravina shows a boisterous, lovable personality right out the gates. LUSH but refined, powerful but classy, it’s overflowing with ripe blackberry, fig, violets, fresh tar, dusty earth, chocolate-covered cherry, spice, and crushed stone minerality. Terrifically complex and super smooth with a round, polished mouthfeel and fine-grained tannins. It drinks beautifully now but could last for years to come.
We recommend moving speedy quick to grab some because, as you may have noticed, Cabernet has been FLYING lately. And this is one ASTOUNDING bottle you must try.
Here’s what the wine press has to say:
93 Points - Vinous
“The 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate Caravina is going to need at least a few years to fully come together. Aromatically expressive and beautifully layered in the glass, the 2014 delivers superb quality and pedigree for the money. Smoke, cedar, tobacco, graphite, tar, licorice and dried herbs add the closing shades of nuance. Caravina remains one of the very best values in Napa Valley Cabernet.”
