Mission Codename Radical roots
Fans of BIG & COLLECTIBLE reds, Italians, AND Aglianico… we would have long lost the “Cabernet of the South” to the dusty pages of the ages if it weren’t for today’s wine! Wine Enthusiast acknowledges that; “thanks to Mastroberardino’s role as defender of the area’s native grapes and wines, Campania is now one of the most exciting winemaking regions in Ital.” and Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate affirms that; “Mastroberardino is the royal family of Campania, the estate’s Taurasi, first produced in 1928, is a legendary wine that can rival the best from any region.”
Black opening to garnet as the core progresses to the rim, giving substantial legs that add appeal to the appearance. Smoky dark fruits with the ripest dark cherries drenched in earthy, leathery hints are all to be found on the singularly Italian nose. Deceptively rich, concentrated, and somehow elegant too at the same time as it fans out across the palate, with silky huge tannins. The finish projects violets and sundried herbs also emerge, as the broad finale engages the back palate for over a minute. Enjoy this unique, fleshy red with smoked meats, or charcuterie, and aged cheeses.
When you get DOUBLE 96 points from Decanter claiming this; “a benchmark for Aglianico” and James Suckling confirming that it’s the “best Radici in years” there is ZERO room left to doubt how screaming a bargain this is! A library vintage direct from the importer so the provenance couldn’t be better either. Buy LOTS and buy with confidence. Radici is Italian for roots and where the word ‘radical’ originates. This, dear Operatives, is as radical as deals get, WILL SELL OUT.
Here’s what the wine press has to say:
96 points – Decanter - “A benchmark for Aglianico, Radici was first produced in 1986. A wine to age for decades, yet surprisingly approachable now. Great density with concentration and depth. Aged two years in oak and two in bottle, this has intense, pure fruit allied to subtle oak, fine tannins and elegance. Some smoky, mineral flavours starting to appear. Ultra refined. A wine with real sense of place.”
96 Points – James Suckling - “I love the spicy and lifted notes here of caramelized orange peel, dried meat, blackcurrants, pomegranate, sea urchin and bark. A seamless and wonderfully elegant, medium-bodied palate follows with finely grained tannins and loads of floral undertones. This wine is all about transparency and subtlety. Best Radici in years. Drink now.”
