Mission Codename Silicon Red
This is Black Ridge Vineyards, not related to Ridge Vineyards of Monte Bello fame, which also happens to share the prestigious Santa Cruz Mountains appellation with other visionaries such as Mount Eden, Thomas Fogarty, Kathryn Kennedy and Rhys Vineyards. We bring them up because it would not be too far fetched to say that the high elevation terroir here can be seen clearly in all the wines, like the view over Silicon Valley from up there on an equally clear day.
A livelier red on the paler side of the spectrum, bordering ruby and garnet, within a broad frame that is quite the eye candy. Wild berries in a basket are the best way to define the distinct perfume, marionberries, strawberries, cherry, a touch of garrigue and graphite too. Savory and ripe on the palate, medium-bodied and irresistibly scrumptious with soft tannins and vivid juiciness. Surprisingly long on the finish in contrast with how easy it is to drink with lingering floral and mineral nuances. This one-of-a-kind red blend is ideal for cheeses and charcuterie or Spring lamb leg steaks char-grilled with rosemary and thyme.
Winemaker Bill Brosseau is a true veteran in these parts of California, who found himself making wine at Pine Ridge and Chalone while still attending UC Davis! Since 2000, he’s been at the helm of Testarossa Winery and his family project Brosseau Wines. Not only is Bill a gifted wizard in the winery but he’s equally famous for his vineyard expertise, a rare dexterity in the world of fine wine that he brings to the unique place that is Black Ridge. Add the many accolades for the winemaker and the break that is just nuts, and we have the perfect Wine Spies deal!
Here’s what the wine press has to say:
91 Points – Wine Enthusiast - “Black currant, lilac, and dried herbs combine for a delicious aromatic entry to this bottling. There is a hearty richness to the palate, with flavors of smoked blackberries framed by firm but forgiving tannins.”
