Ahem! “Château Monbousquet under Gérard Perse’s guidance is exceptional, this growth is probably the most exotic and most sensual wine in Saint-Emilion, if not in all of Bordeaux.” says Robert Parker. With the man who defined the Bordeaux trade since his discovery of the mythical 1982 vintage claiming so, need much else be said, dear Operatives? This is the baby Monbousquet, the 2nd wine of Château Monbousquet, second to none!

Pale claret on the narrow rim, with a deeper ruby core and fascinating purple streaks. The bouquet offers freshly picked blackberries, bramble, plum cake, pencil lead and a touch of rosemary. Medium-bodied with purity, elegance, and grace, amazingly youthful, sappy and fresh on the lively palate. Lingers effortlessly on the finish with fine-grained tannins, mouth-coating with pleasant earthiness. An ideal pairing suggestion would be a thin cut of entrecôte with Bordelaise sauce, chanterelles, creamy kale, and potatoes. Variations on that theme are innumerable.

Monbousquet was love at first sight for business tycoon Gérard Perse and thus became his first investment in Bordeaux. Partnering with part master oenologist part grape whisperer Michel Rolland, their goal became to transform this historic 16th-century property to glory, and they did. He was so inspired by the transformation of Monbousquet that he grew his collection of Châteaux by purchasing Pavie, Pavie-Decesse and La Clusière. The combined count of collectible vintages with massive scores between these four properties since is in the hundreds. As a perfectionist Mr. Perse is incapable of anything less than extraordinary.

In his final vintage assessment for 2015, James Sucking acutely nails it; “the best appellations of 2015 are Pomerol and St.-Émilion, the latter’s limestone plateau on which the small, picturesque town is nestled, was ground zero for some of the stars of 2015.”
