Mission Codename Conntastic!
It was Robert Parker who originally woke the world up to the riches here; “Since 1990, Cabernet Sauvignon has an enviable track record at Anderson’s Conn Valley Vineyard. Tucked away in the sometimes seemingly forgotten Conn Valley, this winery is run with considerable gusto by Todd Anderson. This is an undeniable source of very complex and potentially age-worthy wines… If you have not yet discovered the wines from this nearly 28-acre vineyard tucked away a few miles east of the famed Meadowood Resort, it’s time.” That’s what he wrote, followed with tens of 95+ scores over the years to back it. Now we bring you, an unforeseeable deal on a Reserve Conn Valley from a Napa Cabernet vintage that’s rated 98 points by Wine Spectator and Robert Parker!
The perfect amalgamation of black, blue and purple with faint red highlights mark the appeal. Smoky, intense and explosively rich on the nose with cassis, blueberry, and pine needles. Bursting dark chocolatey tannins with bold, ripe cherries and scorched earth coat the mouth. Authoritative and ever so building in intensity on the finish, with a fresh minerality to spare. A long-term cellar red for the ages, while you certainly are welcome to open now, and decant for a decadent feast for the senses.
We first could not comprehend how critics found this wine much shy of perfection, as it’s a definitive Cabernet Sauvignon from head to toe, however, if you consider the fact that their higher-rated specialty Cabs and Cab blends from the same vintage go up to $400 per bottle, it becomes more evident that they were leaving room for bigger accolades on those by seriously underrating this. Winemaker Robert Hunt is truly gifted and we’re major fans of his craft. While not making intriguing and beguiling wines at Anderson’s Conn Valley, he’s making wine at Napa’s Clos Pegase. Past posts? Robert has honed his skills at little known - pun intended - wineries such as Pine Ridge, Colgin, and Ovid to name a few. This pedigree, this expertise, all that at 40% off, only at The Wine Spies, while it lasts…
Here’s what the wine press has to say:
94 Points - Wine Advocate - “Deep purple-black in color, the 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate Reserve is a little closed to begin, slowly revealing fresh blackberries, blackcurrants and black plums notes with touches of eucalypt, cinnamon stick, roses and fertile soil. Medium to full-bodied, the palate delivers mouth-filling black fruits with plenty of spicy accents and a pleasantly chewy finish. Drink 2019-2034.”
94 Points - Jeb Dunnuck - “ The 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate Reserve spent 22 months in 55% new French oak. It offers a classic Cabernet nose of blackcurrants, new saddle leather, lead pencil, and dried tobacco. This gives way to a medium to full-bodied, supple, elegant wine that has loads of charm and character. It’s a beautiful wine that will keep for 15 years or more. Drink 2019-2034.”
