Mission Codename Givry Goode
It is not often that you find an impressive white Burgundy around $20, loaded with personality and complex as can be Operatives, so listen in and buy up, this is a rare find. Master of Wine and foremost Burgundy expert Clive Coates points out in his authoritative ‘The Wines of Burgundy’ book that; “the 30-something Guy Sarrazin is in charge here at this extensive family Domaine where the quality is reliable.”
The yellow-silver highlights please the eye, evoking ripe lemons hanging under the sun. The nose possesses notably cool and very fresh aromas of apple, pear, white flower, lemon peel all shining through. There is deep richness to the appealingly textured flavors that show great concentration on the palate. The clean and mineral-laced finale wraps up a first-rate Villages offering very fine quality. The ultimate accompaniment would be Coquilles Saint-Jacques, that fancy scallops classic in a decadent buttery white wine sauce.
This single vineyard Chardonnay from one of the lesser known corners of Burgundy can easily give a run for the money to its much, much pricier counterparts from just up North. Yet another reason this is a rarity is that only 15% of Givry’s vineyards are planted to white grapes. All that at over 40% OFF, act fast!
Here’s what the wine press has to say:
Bill Nanson, Burgundy Report - ”The old house / Domaine is in the small hamlet of Jambles which sits on the edge of the Givry appellation, but just 5 minutes through the vineyards of Givry and you end up at an impressive modern cuverie just a little nearer to Givry town. This is a very old family domain that can trace its roots back to 1671. Michel Sarrazin has been succeeded here by his sons Jean-Yves and Guy. Grapes from 35 hectares of vines arrive here – 20 of Givry plus some Mercurey and Maranges and others. The Domaine needs 15 days to harvest with a mix of manual and machine harvesting, depending on the parcels – about 30% of which are white grapes… A mix of concrete and enamel closed-top fermentation tanks are used for the destemmed grapes. These are big tanks! Guy says that he’s really looking to touch the harvested grapes as little as possible. Elevage for both colours is in barrel – one year – the wines being racked before the next harvest. The Domaine has a big French clientele – about 60% is bought direct from the cave and only about 20% is exported. Very good wines here, and unusually the whites are every bit as good as the reds (it seems a hard thing in the Côte Chalonnaise) – no sweetly-flavoured, part-oaked Chardonnay, rather wines of tension, minerality and engaging complexity.”
