Mission Codename Double Black

It is not often that we showcase a 95 point wine, and almost never one that sells for just $15.99! This Old World Italian marvel is a must-have for those casual Tuesday night spaghetti dinners. At today’s price, we’ll be adding some to our own cellars. That is, if our Operatives don’t buy it all before we can get our hands on some.

This Negroamaro has a bright ruby core with a thin lip of vermillion around the very edge. Classically Italian extracted aromas of cola, bramble, stewed plum, granola, and pecan permeate the bouquet. Rich and nutty flavors remind one of a sherry, with walnut and pecan joining in a chorus of desiccated fruit notes of red and black cherry. People are often drawn to Italian wine for their lighter body and this is no exception, offering a food-friendly drinking experience. Roll up your sleeves and get started on homemade ravioli stuffed with porcini mushrooms in a bolognese sauce.

About Negroamaro:

This grape is indigenous to the southern Italian region of Puglia, and is nearly exclusive to the peninsula (Italy’s heel) of Salento. This region splits the Adriatic from the Ionian Sea. The Negroamaro grape is known for deep rustic and earthy wines that are among the best in the region. Mistakenly called ‘Black Bitter’ from the name Negro Amaro, the correct meaning is Black Black from the combination of Latin Negro and Greek Maro with its history thought to date back to the 7th century BC before the time of Pliny.

Here’s what the wine press has to say: 95 points - Its intense red colour with garnet-coloured notes is due to the extended maceration of the grapes. The aromatic profile is complex and delicate, ranging from ripe red fruit jam to a hint of bitter almond. The palate is fresh, intense, sweet, soft squishy wild cherry jam fruit, with a good finish of balanced tannin and acidity. - Lida N.
