2013 Napa Cabernets are the absolute darlings of the wine world at the moment. Be sure to purchase enough to keep plenty on hand for the next decade or longer.
This Napa Cab has excellent color density - it’s so dark it’s almost black. You need to hold it to a light to see the bright ruby edge. The nose is as complex as you’d expect it to be, harkening from 14 Napa AVAs. It’s got cassis, cranberry, fig, leather, cocoa, sandalwood, and allspice. Big time! On the palate, you’re treated to a brooding medley of black cherry, rhubarb, molasses with robust spice of cigar box, baking spices, and subtle cinnamon. An excellent example of layered complexity, the wine unfolds slowly from the front of the palate to the back, revealing new flavors and texture as it goes. Plan ahead and give yourself some time to prepare a brisket that falls apart and melts in your mouth. Throw in some roasted fingerling potatoes and it’ll be worth the wait.
This is one of the last vintages made by Conn Creek’s Winemaker, Mike McGrath, who spent 35 years making wine with some of the greats, like Grgich Hills Estate, William Hill Estate Winery, Villa Mt. Eden, and Charles Krug before joining Conn Creek. Mike, who retired from Conn Creek last year, gushes with pride over today’s wine, in this video:
Drink now, and lay a few bottles down for the next 10-15 years - or longer! This wine was built to last.
Here’s what the wine press has to say:
90 points - Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate - ”The 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Anthology enhances the richness of their basic Cabernet Sauvignon. It has a denser, darker ruby/purple color. Loads of crème de cassis, licorice and floral notes. The wine is medium to full-bodied with supple tannins and a nice, velvety finish. It should drink nicely for 10-15 years.”
