Tasting Notes
This third vintage of the Materra flagship Merlot is made completely from grapes grown and farmed on the Cunat Family Vineyard. A classic Napa Valley Merlot from the Oak Knoll district, one of Napa’s premier Merlot regions, this wine is rich in flavor, aromas and structure. First scents of blackberry, blueberry and ripe raspberry are followed by dried herbs de provence, lavender and thyme. The first taste highlights all the berry aromas, but combines the red fruit with cocoa and cherry apply spice. The wine is elegantly balanced with hints of minerality, well developed tannins and an array of fruits. Enjoy now with beef and caramelized onions, pasta with sun dried tomatoes or flavored cheesecakes. Flavors and complexity will continue to develop for up to 10 years in the cellar.
2009 Vintage
By all accounts, 2009 was a spectacular vintage for Napa Valley growers. The fruit ripened steadily throughout the ideal growing conditions from spring into summer and fall. No real heat spikes allowed for longer hang times which give the grapes ripeness and maturity without excessive sugar. The longer hang times meant two October storms caught some Cabernet Sauvignon still on the vine, but Merlot grapes were already harvested and crushed before the storms. Recognized as a ‘drama and stress free’ vintage, wines from 2009 are expected to rival the best vintages from Napa Valley.
