Mission Codename Banner Year
Most wine lovers know - and love - the wines of Joseph Phelps Vineyards. The winery was founded in 1973 and quickly rose to critical acclaim. Thier $250 Insignia Cabernet Sauvignon remains their most notable wine, but it is their Chardonnay that has captivated white wine lovers around the globe - and today we’re thrilled to bring you their accessible, approachable, delectable 2015 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon.
2015 Napa Cabernet Sauvignon may sound like a young vintage, but today’s brilliant Joseph Phelps Vineyards 2015 Estate Grown Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon tells us otherwise. This wine still has years (decades?) left in it, but, oh my, the fruit and spice on this wine! We’re looking forward to tracking the progress of this one and will be adding a case or two to our cellar to enjoy for years to come.
This Cabernet has an inky dark garnet core spreading out to a meniscus with a bright violet hue. The wine has a beautiful and well-developed nose, replete with Chinese five-spice, mocha, black currant, bramble and freshly tilled earth. It is received exceptionally well on the palate, with flavors of currant, pomegranate, fruitcake, tobacco and well-integrated oak. Beautifully balanced, this Cabernet is an all-around winner with a nice layered structured that is complex yet tightly integrated. Wonderful from start to finish. This is a classic Napa Cab that calls for a classic meal. Go big with a T-bone steak topped off with a peppercorn reduction sauce.
Grab this wine while you can. Our allocation is expected to sell out soon.
Here’s what the press has to say.
93 Points - James Suckling - “Lots of burnt orange with currant and dust undertones. Some rose petal, too. Full body, chewy and tannic with lots of tension and intensity. Needs two or three years to soften but already a very impressive wine for the vintage. Drink in 2020.”
93 Points - Jeb Dunnuck - “Deeper and richer than the 2014 with gorgeous notes of black currants, plums, graphite, toasted spice and licorice, this beauty is full-bodied, supple and seamless on the palate, with fine, fine tannin and surprising freshness and purity. It’s a beautiful, layered wine to drink over the coming 15-20 years.”
91 Point - Robert Parker Wine Advocate - “The 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon reveals a medium to deep garnet-purple color and nose of red and black currants, black raspberries and mulberries with hints of pencil shavings, cinnamon stick, cloves and vanilla pod. Medium to full-bodied, the palate has great freshness, with the vibrant, open-for-business fruit well supported by ripe, grainy tannins, finishing with good length.”
