At long last, Angel Camp Vineyard is back! This time around with their impressive 90 point wine, the Angel Camp Vineyard 2014 Estate Grown Anderson Valley Pinot Noir.

This wine is as delicious as it is elegant, made by Philip Baxter, who learned his art at some of the most respected wineries in the world.

Angel Camp is very popular with our Operatives and everyone on our tasting panel agreed that today’s Anderson Valley Pinot is impressive - and a great value.

Today’s wine is delightfully fragrant, with a fresh and inviting nose of wild strawberry, red currant, India black tea, cedar plank, black cherry, forest floor with subtle graphite and subtle spice.

Juicy and delicious on the palate, with layered flavors of blackberry, wild strawberry, black cherry, plum, cedar, forest floor, dried wild mushroom, black tea leaf, subtle graphite, soft oak, and subtle spice.

Winemaker Philip Baxter is a California native who has been making wine in California since the 1960s. His career began at the Charles Krug Winery, then he went on to develop the Souverain Napa operation and was the head winemaker at Rutherford Hill Winery for its first ten years. Philip then moved to the Dry Creek Valley as the winemaker at Domaine-Michel and, after a long run there, went on to make wines at cult wineries Mario Perelli-Minetti, Fife Napa, and Terra Valentine on Spring Mountain. Today, he makes wine for Angel Camp Vineyards and his namesake Baxter label.

Some of California’s finest Pinots come from the Anderson Valley. The Anderson Valley AVA (American Viticultural Area) in Mendocino County runs long the Anderson River, which flows northwest from near Boonville toward Navarro. The west side of the Anderson River rises to a region known as the Mendocino ridge, a higher elevation aspect than much of the inland wine growing regions in Mendocino County.

When I tasted this wine, I thought to myself, “This doesn’t really remind me of the Anderson Valley.” Yet the 2013 Angel Camp Estate Grown Pinot Noir seems like a labor of love from a very dedicated artisan producer. Richer in dark fruits and fuller on the palate, this is a pretty fine and well-conceived effort. Medium to dark garnet color; ripe strawberry aroma, lots and fruit and pleasing aromatics, medium depth; red cherries and wild strawberries in the flavors, medium depth; bright textures on a medium body and generous on the palate; dry, medium acidity, nice balance; lively finish.”
