Today I am very proud to bring you our latest Super Spy Sunday wine, the very special 93 point (Robert Parker) La Velona 2010 Brunello Di Montalcino.

This wine is extraordinary. It delivers everything you want and expect in a DOCG Brunello di Montalcino, with old world charm and plenty of bright fruit. This is a very food friendly wine that will pair with everything from the obvious (Italian dishes!) to the more unusual, like grilled marinated portobello mushrooms over polenta and beef. And for what is considered a classic pairing partner, enjoy this wine with stewed cinghiale.

Just 5 years young, this wine still has a long way to go until it even peaks. It is drinking beautifully at the moment and we encourage you to pick up enough bottles (cases?) to allow you to enjoy some now - and for the next decade or more.

Here’s what Robert Parker had to say about today’s wine:

“The 2010 Brunello di Montalcino is one of the best value wines of this celebrated vintage. Fruit is sourced from the Castelnuovo dell’Abate subzone of the appellation and you immediately notice the extra density and power of this wine (the label reads 14.5% alcohol and you feel it). That power is well checked by the general richness and pulpiness of the mouthfeel and the balanced intensity of the bouquet.”

“Having said that, this Brunello definitely veers toward the savory side of the Sangiovese spectrum with dark cherry tones, dried meat and exotic spice. The results are masculine and muscular and that extra grit should carry the wine forward over the next ten years. Gianfranco Bomba sources fruit from various vineyards including the Podere Pietranera property located in the Abbazia di Sant’Antimo sub-zone. Together, it counts 12 hectares of vine on marine fossil and galestro-rich soils.”
