Mission Codename Game time
APPY Friday Indeed.
Did you grab all the Echézeaux you can afford? Are you sure? Good, cause you won’t find another one under $200 again, almost guaranteed, well, nothing in life is.
Now, you NEED some of this too, because a) it’s not too far from the quality of the Echézeaux, and b) it’s less than half the price, thus ideal to enjoy while you await that special occasion.
We were so excited about the first-ever Echézeaux on Wine Spies that we forgot to talk much about the impeccable Domaine des Perdrix, the crown jewel of the Devillard family, with 5 generations as growers in Burgundy, as they also own Château de Chamirey in Mercurey, Domaine de la Ferté in Givry, Domaine de la Garenne in the Mâconnais, and Domaine Rolet, in the Jura. That’s quite the portfolio!
Fascinatingly, this 1er Cru vineyard is labeled a ‘Quasi Monopole’ as the term Monopole in Burgundy is for 100% family-owned vineyards, but the Devillards own 99% of Aux Perdrix, and they make the only wine labeled so. from vines that date back to 1922!
By the way, Perdrix means partridge in French, a hugely popular game bird since medieval times there with a rich history as a perfect pairing with a mature and royal red Burgundy just like this.
Only 90 cases imported! And wish we could say we have all that, not a tiny fraction.
93 Points – Wine Spectator “A powerful red, delivering plum, black cherry and sweet spice flavors, with hints of loam and dried herbs. Dense and solidly built, ending in a long, concentrated aftertaste. 816 cases made, 90 cases imported. Best from 2025 through 2040.”
