Mission Codename Piece by piece
Kintsugi - a Japanese metaphor for embracing your flaws and imperfections.
The wine? No flaws or imperfections head to toe. *(the name actually implies that it’s fermented in many different vessels before blending)
Seriously, does Napa Sauvignon Blanc get any more delicious than this at $20? $30? $50+ even??
We think not.
Terra Cellars is a spinoff from Jericho Canyon, with a cult following and top consultants such as David Ramey and Aaron Pott, all contributing to that fame. It’s worth noting here that per The Napa Wine Project “For many years prior to holding some of the grapes back for themselves, Jericho Canyon sold all their fruit to other premium Napa wineries including Chateau Montelena, Sterling Vineyards & Rudd.” Sourced within their well-established circles, Kintsugi features other highly sought-after sites like Ryan’s Vineyard. With a keen focus on Sauvignon Blanc, it’s shared by the likes of Accendo Cellars, Matthiasson, Peirson Meyer, Malk Family, etc.
One whiff and it sings out loud thanks to 75% being the famously aromatic ‘musque’ clone of Sauvignon Blanc, with white peaches, mandarin peel, key lime, and wet stones, with wafts of orange blossom and a touch of honey. Elegantly crafted and yet incredibly intense, the citrus flavors are beautifully defined by a bright backbone, finishing long and steely. Just getting into its groove, it will get even more fascinating over the next half-decade. Shellfish or any seafood dish, raw or cooked, ought to work fabulously well… what a steal with this $20 deal!
Back to The Napa Wine Project and this wine, “thoughtfully crafted from blending lots resulting from time in a diversity of fermentation vessels. It is medium straw in color. The spirited bouquet smells like the variety with herbal scents of citrus blossom, honeysuckle, green apple, kaffir lime, grapefruit and freshly mowed lawn. This latter aromatic reminded us of our recent late spring trip to the Midwest and the resulting aromas from what seemed like everyone on their tractor mowers desperately trying to keep up with the fast-growing grass. Zippy and refreshing with bright but not bracing acidity, this wine is a pleasure to drink. Balanced from the entry through the finish, the palate sports flavors of honeydew melon, pomelo, white peaches, gooseberry and lingers with a subtle note of tarragon. This is the ideal breakfast wine, as we can personally attest. Wake me up in the morning with this bottle, please.”
