Mission Codename Riders on the storm
Blue skies and 80 degrees here in Napa but that can’t stop this storm from rolling in.
This one might sweep you off your feet and bowl you over, but it won’t leave you picking up pieces of your chimney or clearing debris off the sidewalk.
In fact, the only thing crumbling is the price, going from $80 to $35. For those who might remember, when we last sold this same wine it was just under $50. Seeing today’s price brings a tear to our negotiation-weary eyes.
The truth is you can spend A LOT more on big, pumped-up Napa Cab. But they don’t get much better than this. If you’ve had the previous Stormy Weather, we offered (over two years ago!) you already know the deal. This, the “second” wine under the label is just “no slouch” as they say on the website and fits the mold of “a jammy bomb of a Cab. Sauv is made in the Stormy Weather style and gives Stormy Weather some competition. Kinda like Stormy’s kid brother (who also packs a punch!).”
For the uninitiated, here’s the scoop:
Many of you know Hundred Acre, the cult favorite, $400/bottle, almost always 100-points Cabs by Jayson Woodbridge, the man, the myth. But did you know his brother Cameron also makes badass wine in a runs-in-the-family full-throttle, all-or-nothing style?
Cameron worked alongside his brother and Philippe Melka, who consulted for Hundred Acre at the time, back in 2005. He honed his skills and broke out to make similarly opulent, hedonistic, high-scoring Cabs.
But wait… there’s one BIG difference… The price. You can get ten of these today for the price of a single bottle of Hundred Acre.
In the glass it’s dark as the eye of a tornado and just as strong. Every sip sends you on a category 5 thrill ride, with mouthfuls of silky extracted black and red cherry, tilled earth, boysenberry jam, cigar box, exotic spices, and layers of rich dark chocolate wafers. All carried on a wave of fine-grained sweet tannin. Fairly hedonistic in style, and while it doesn’t hit Hundred Acre levels, it sure does deliver a similarly flashy style for a fraction of the price.
Like the barometric pressure in a hurricane, our inventory is no doubt already rapidly plummeting. This storm will pass soon, so make your move!
90 Points – Jeb Dunnuck Coming from the cooler Coombsville appellation and all varietal, the 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon Northern Gale shines for its elegance and is a charming, silky, medium-bodied effort offering savory herbs, dried tobacco, leather, and both cassis and black raspberry-like fruits. Brought up in 36% new barrels, with the balance in once used French oak, it’s a solid, satisfying, impeccably made Cabernet to drink over the coming 10-15 years.
