Mission Codename Beyond Runway
Do names like Tenuta San Guido & Tenuta dell’Ornellaia get your heart beating a little faster? Did you scoop up some of that Cavalli we blew through a few weeks ago? How does Tenuta degli Dei make you feel?!
Those who recognize the name know it’s rarely seen in the USA and already skipped out of here to grab some. If you’re still in the dark, let’s quickly get you caught up on this Super Tuscan powerhouse.
For starters, the scores: 3 to be exact, 94, 95 and 96 points respectively, and now check the price - OVER 50% off at well under $40, this is a wine you can afford to stock up on.
We’re not the only ones who see clearly that this one can easily measure up to the top Super Tuscans that go for up to 10 TIMES what you’re paying here today. Antonio Galloni’s Vinous notes he was even “surprised by the wine’s silky tannins and exceptional balance.” Big and bold (unsurprisingly), he notes that “all the elements are so well balanced.”
AND for one of our favorite tasting notes to date, Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate calls this beauty, “a big-boned wine balanced out with fine-knit tannins.” Yes, please and thank you!
By the way, if you’ve been wondering why this wine is SO chic, yes, this is THAT fashion icon Cavalli, one of the most talked about Italian designers today. Here’s more on that side of Cavalli if that world intrigues you - now back to the wine…
In the glass it’s flamboyant and flashy for sure, yet with that unmistakable Tuscan feel of the countryside, where Arabian horses and classic Ferraris dwell side by side in the stately ‘farms.’ And where world famous olive oils, charcuterie and cheeses are only surpassed by the reputation of the wines.
The nose has it all, big bold dark berries – check. Espresso beans and chocolate sauce – check. Earth and a mélange of herbs – check. A touch of exotic spice – check. Then we get into the glass. On the tongue, soft and silky tannins wrap around the complexity of fruit. Perfectly structured to carry on for decades plus and showing its elegant strength out the gate. This is ummph and grace at its finest.
With these scores, this price, you’ll be lucky to get a few bottles so be quick!
96 Points – Vinous “The 2021 Tenuta degli Dei is an unusual blend of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Petit Verdot and 15% Cabernet Franc. Most of all, I am surprised by the wine’s silky tannins and exceptional balance. Dark-toned fruit, leather, spice, menthol, mocha and lavender build with some aeration. It’s a big red, as are all of the wines here, but all the elements are so well balanced. The 2021 spent 20 months in barrique and tonneaux, 50% new.”
95 Points – Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate “The Tenuta degli Dei 2021 Cavalli is a blend of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Cabernet Franc and 35% Petit Verdot aged in both barrique and tonneaux for 18 months, followed by a brief time in cement. This is an inky dark expression with big fruit weight and ripe blackberry, damson plum, cigar box and shadings of exotic spice. This is a big-boned wine balanced out with fine-knit tannins. Exactly 18,357 numbered bottles were made.”
94 Points – James Suckling “Very intense, smoky character of coffee grounds, graphite, leaves and restrained cassis. Dense palate with a full body and velvety, slightly dusty tannins that are well integrated. Supple, savory and refreshing finish. Leather complexity at the end. Drink or hold.”
