When we featured our first Patrimony, there was no better effort from DAOU. It was hard to imagine them topping the raw power, depth, and enormity of that wine.
Then came the Caves de Lions.
Near perfect scores from four of the pros - with THREE 99 POINT ratings in the mix, and a 98 tagging along. Clearly this is the alpha in a very strong lineup of other incredible wines.
As best said by Vinous “Daou wines can stand up to many of the best Napa wines and, although far from inexpensive, they sell for quite a bit less than those of similar or lesser quality from up north.”
DAOU’s flagship Patrimony line deconstructs our ideas about the limits of winemaking around the globe and then reassembles them into an altogether new reference point of understanding.
Jeb Dunnuck explains that “What can be thought of as the flagship label from the DAOU brothers, Patrimony includes four releases – varietal releases of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, and Merlot, and their Caves des Lions, which is a blend from a vineyard around the home of one of the brothers. These are the real deal and consistently rank with the finest Bordeaux varieties coming out of California today.”
They spare NO expense. The barrel program uses the absolute best - Taransaud T5 for example is a very pricey option that few producers have the luxury to use. Deep like the Mariana Trench. Wide like the 405. Packed, stacked, and ready to raise the bar on what you think is possible from Paso. And while others have it upwards of $300+, we are busting it out at by far the lowest price you’ll find anywhere…
As Vinous sums it up “Napa, Bordeaux and Cabernet Sauvignon lovers should take note because, while far from inexpensive, these wines still offer tremendous relative value.”
Indulge your senses… who knows what tomorrow brings let alone the next couple of hours!
99 Points – Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate
“The 2019 Caves des Lions is a blend of free-run Cabernet Sauvignon (52%) and Cabernet Franc (48%) matured for 22 months in 100% new French oak and bottled in December of 2021. Opaque ruby in color, it has layered aromas of blackcurrant, lilac, graphite, fried savory herbs and game meats. The full-bodied palate is powerful yet balanced, its restrained, mineral-laced fruit complemented by mouthwatering acidity, and it boasts a long, graceful finish. Harmonious and latent, it will demand plenty of patience as it unwinds in bottle - the Patrimony wines tend to age at a glacial pace. Drik 2024-2044.”
99 Points – The Tasting Panel
“This truly world-class blend of 52% Cabernet Sauvignon and 48% Cab Franc continues to impress. It possesses an incomparable mouthfeel, setting a benchmark for the region. Its sultry, round, violet- and cocoa-kissed tannins engage with a plum-pudding effect. The body weight is perceptible, engaging with a gliding wash of kirsch and black pepper to make for a silky, textural dream.”
98 Points – Antonio Galloni’s Vinous
“Wildly spicy and intense yet lifted, the 2019 Patrimony Caves des Lions wafts up with an array of pepper-tinged wildflowers, spiced exotic tea, dusty dried herbs and red currant. A pretty inner sweetness up front accentuates its silken textures, further elevated by citrus and mineral nuances. Ripe red and black fruits resonate throughout. This finishes incredibly fresh yet structured, lingering impossibly long. Through it all, a tinge of residual acids maintains remarkable freshness. Drink 2026-2040.”
97-99 Points – Jeb Dunnuck
“Along the same lines, the 2019 Patrimony Caves des Lions is slightly more voluptuous yet still has a beautiful minerality, full-bodied richness, awesome complexity and nuance, and a stunning finish. This flawlessly balanced, seamless barrel sample is another wine that marries power with elegance beautifully.”
