Mission Codename Shake Your Pom Pom
“There are 4 wineries in the Lalande de Pomerol with the name Viaud, however, this is the wine to watch for, due to its terroir and talented team.” – Wine Cellar Insider
Alrighty then, look what we’ve got here today.
Michel Rolland made Pomerol satellite lusciousness for how much?!
How do you get the attention of the busiest man in the wine world? By being in his neck of the woods, smack in the heart of the Right Bank. That’s how we spotted Enclos de Viaud. Otherwise, it barely exists. As a part of the prestigious Vignobles K portfolio, it’s shadowed by bigger names such as Tour Saint Christophe or Bellefont-Belcier. This tiny 6-acre is super hard to come by with minuscule amounts made every vintage, you’re basically looking at most of what’s made!
In a recent lineup of impressive Bordeaux from all over the appellations and price ranges, it stood out, in fact surpassing wines 2-3 times its humble price. Rich, toasty, and showy, boasting loads of flashy cassis, anise, and espresso up front, with ample layers of dark mixed berry fruit, fig, and steeped plum following in the midpalate. Impressively grippy on the finish with smoky tannins, graphite, sage, and thyme adding serious complexity, length, and definition. Tons of sizzle here to match any steak its size!
What Jeb D. said, “it would easily pass for a top Pomerol…”
For, wait, 25 bucks? You’ve got to be kidding me.
91-93+ Points – Jeb Dunnuck
“From the Lalande-de-Pomerol region, the 2019 Château Enclos de Viaud reveals a dense plum/purple color as well as a smoky, meaty bouquet of ripe red, black, and blue fruits interwoven with lots of violets, spring flowers, licorice, and chocolate. It would easily pass for a top Pomerol with its full-bodied richness, ripe, silky tannins, and pure, sexy style. Drink 2022-2034.”
92 Points – James Suckling
“This shows aromas of ripe blackberries and plums, together with some tobacco, dark chocolate with light peppery notes. Medium-bodied with ripe, velvety tannins. Polished and sleek with a crushed-stone feel to it. Delicious fruit that’s lightly jammy. Drinkable now, but better after 2024.”
90-92 Points – Antonio Galloni’s Vinous
“The 2019 Enclos de Viaud comes from 3.18-ha of vine, picked on 5 October and matured in 10% new oak, the remainder in one-year old. It has a straightforward bouquet with blackcurrant and crème de cassis aromas, lively and cohesive. The prudent use of oak knits everything together. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins and a fine bead of acidity. Moderate in terms of weight it exerts a gentle grip towards the refreshingly briny finish. There is something quite traditional about this Lalande-de-Pomerol that is appealing and certainly well worth seeking out once released. Drink 2023-2035.”
