Mission Codename Oh Joy!
It’s hard to believe this marks our 20th feature from the Shannon Family of Wines.
Actually, it’s not hard to believe.
They always deliver delicious wines that rival the best of Napa and other premier regions at a fraction of the price.
This 93-pointer today at a mere $29 is no exception. The winery released it at $60 mind you, and there’s no questioning the value of this big, fruit-packed red at either price.
Their Project OVIS initiative actually goes so far beyond the typical sustainable farming that it won the California Green Medal Environment Award in 2021:
While Joy Merrilees remains the trusted decade-long VP of Winemaking here at Shannon Family, they did bring a new secret weapon into the mix.
Enter Atelier Melka - one of the premier consulting teams in wine. San Francisco Chronicle offers a short explanation why: “Melka couldn’t make a bad wine if he tried. He’s the wine-world equivalent of an NBA All-Star who’s won numerous Championship games - in his case, a string of 100-point scores - and played for all the best teams, which in the world of wine is like being the winemaker for a bevy of wealthy, high-end clients.”
Just last year Robb Report picked an Ovis among “7 Superb Petite Sirahs From California to Drink Right Now: The Golden State makes some outstanding bottles of this big, fruity red.” they wrote, adding “if you’re looking for a wine that’s big, fruity, and inky colored, Petite Sirah should be on your radar.”
Big! Fruity! Inky! It delivers an explosion of inky blue/purplish fruit, lavender, menthol, and white flowers giving its aromatic intensity and thrust. There is so much to look forward to - while being utterly irresistible today. What a gorgeous red to open for the transition from summer to fall.
Stake your claim by the case - a few bottles won’t be enough!
93 Points – Wine Enthusiast
“This wine is rich with aromas of blackberry, clove, African violet and dried chicory. The palate has flavors of huckleberry, blueberry, cherry cola, orange zest and Earl Grey tea, sliding into a silky, dry finish. Decant the wine and enjoy.”
