Mission Codename All day
Summer is in full swing, and there’s no better way to celebrate the season than with a bottle of exquisite Napa Valley – NO, make that a Rutherford Single Vineyard Rosé! Or a case? I mean… how can you Rosé all day if you don’t have cases of it??
You might remember Kale from a few months ago with the killer Rutherford red counterpart to this with great scores. We went back to the winery and begged for some more juicy goodness! And it came in just in time for sipping on the patio or setting off fireworks for the 4th!
If you weren’t paying attention to the previous offer, you’ve probably never heard of Kale Anderson. But maybe you know Colgin, Cliff Lede, or Terra Valentine as some of the places he has made wine.
And you surely know of Pahlmeyer where Kale as head winemaker crafted their epic 2013 Piece de Resistance, AKA their first 100-pointer. That cemented his legacy, as the youngest winemaker to attain a perfect score from Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate!
For the past decade or so he’s been making wine under his own label. He only makes about a thousand cases a year. Not much makes it outside his tasting room or mailing list - and this is exactly the kind of locals-only deal we LOVE to bring to the masses.
And this is easily one of the best Rosés we have featured on Wine Spies. The magic starts with McGah Vineyard, a legendary site just south of Caymus towards the Oakville border of Rutherford wrapped by Beckstoffer Vineyards. Only a few select producers work with this fruit; Bevan, Fayard, and Scarlett being the best known. If reds turn out that good, imagine a Rosé with all the complexity and brilliance of that kinda terroir. Crafted to perfection, this is dry, pretty, and oh-so-affordable.
On the nose, cherish the great citrus, raspberry, and rhubarb. And then it leads to strawberry shortcake, hibiscus, roses, and brilliant minerality on the tongue. It turned out darker this year in vintages past and this vintage’s acid helps it age with the best of them.
It comes as a surprise that 2021 - the best vintage for it ever - has not been reviewed, but previous vintages have consistently been press darlings, with Wine Enthusiast LOVING it last with the 2019, they found all we love in this one too: “complex, spicy… dried herb, dark cherry, and strawberry cream combine to fulfill a fruity, lifted experience on the palate, finishing in lemongrass.”
This is not one to mess around with! His last one flew and there ain’t much of this to spare either. If you want an epic Rosé to celebrate your Independence Day and beyond, get to it!
