Mission Codename Come to Pape
Deep Cover: Calling the wine cognoscenti, collectors, or aficionados… we just got 5 MORE CASES of one of the most exciting wines to ever land in our warehouse.
The one that Jeb Dunnuck called, “as usual, Vincent has made one of the wines of the vintage.”
CLOS DES PAPES!
An instant classic, and much sought after year after year. It always brings in huge scores (96 points and THREE 95s on this vintage).
That we have ANY of this is an extraordinary feat.
To have it at this unobtanium-type price? Insane.
Clos des Papes is one of the most prolific producers in all of Châteauneuf. Always busting at the seams with HUGE scores, and a top-rated wine in every vintage. Owner Paul Avril makes these in a more “Burgundian” style - not as concentrated and brawny, but it still shows off that riper, polished, and ethereal quality that the greatest Rhone wines are known for.
This joins 55% Grenache with 30% Mourvèdre and 10% Syrah to create a beautifully seamless mélange with ALL the red fruits, spices, and savory leather and herbs. The kirsch and cassis shine with red raspberry coulis and Australian licorice entering in the mix. The wind-swept garrigue pops. Iron ore minerality, old tobacco and saddle leather come into perfect focus. It’s all there, terrifically balanced and primed for your enjoyment.
In 15+ years of business, we have not seen a much more astounding, compelling, and straight-up irresistible deal. If Rhône wines are your thing and Châteauneuf gets your blood pumping, heart rate elevating and eyes dilating, you MUST capture some of this.
96 Points – Wine Spectator
“Elegant and approachable, this stunning red offers seductive aromatics of smoked incense and red tea, with floral high notes, followed by a well of cassis, licorice and red currant flavors coated in graphite. Dusty in feel, with fine-grained tannins bringing structure and textural complexity, while an iron element lingers on the very long finish.”
95 Points – Jeb Dunnuck
“One of the standouts in the vintage is the 2021 Châteauneuf Du Pape, a ripe, round, medium to full-bodied 2021 offering a beautiful array of black cherry and darker berry fruits, ample Provençal spice, and dried flower nuances. Wonderfully textured and balanced, with ripe tannins, as usual, Vincent has made one of the wines of the vintage. This will evolve gracefully for 15+ years.”
95 Points – Decanter
“Defined raspberry and redcurrant fruits, some woody spices in the background. Quite a rounded, fluid style, the acidity is really quite marked this year. Tannins are gentle, and it finishes on raspberry and redcurrant coulis. There’s a silky touch on the palate. It’s built around the acidity, the tannins are just gently sandy. Good sense of purity, quite a Burgundian vintage. Less Grenache in the blend this year as it was particularly hit by the frost.”
95 Points – Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate
“Cherries, raspberries and truffles appear on the nose of the 2021 Chateauneuf du Pape, which weighs in at 15.1% alcohol. Showing ample concentration and length, this medium to full-bodied effort isn’t quite as well endowed as the 2022, but it’s still a gorgeous wine, framed by silky tannins and finishing with bright, pomegranate-like fruit.”
