UKAN, the elegance of Laguardia’s old vines, is the winery’s icon. The result of a meticulous vineyard selection that discovered three old Tempranillo vineyards in Laguardia. Each plot is elaborated separately to enhance its uniqueness and then blended into a single elegant and well-structured wine. UKAN is a complex, full-bodied, and very drinkable wine with a lot of aging potential.
A dry and cold winter followed by a rainy spring that was welcomed by the blooming vines. After a chilly and moist month of May, in June the temperature started to raise and stayed very warm during the summer, one of the hottest in recent years. Luckily, the heat waves were followed by gentle showers that allowed the vineyards to continue their vegetative cycle without stopping due to water stress and resulting in a low yield and high-quality harvest in October with perfectly healthy grapes.
The grapes were hand-harvested into 15kg small bins, the bunches were received at the sorting table for a rigorous selection. For maceration, the grapes were 70% destemmed, and 30% were left as whole cluster. Fermentation took place in 20HL French oak open-top vats prior to moving the wine to new oak barrels for 17 months of aging, 95% of which were French, and 5% were American.
