Mission Codename Tutto bene
“2019 is definitely a vintage to buy.” – James Suckling
NOT La Sirena, but La Serena.
Though, if Heidi Barrett made a Brunello under her insanely popular mermaid label, it wouldn’t be too far off this beauty, that’s for sure.
And forty bucks for 97 points?! Price slashed in half for one of the top Brunelli of 2019, it’s by far the best price you’ll find anywhere on this somewhat hard-to-find Brunello, so we say… ANDIAMO!
La Serena is, per Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate “a producer whose star is clearly on the rise.” “Here’s a brief history of La Serena” they elaborate, “The estate was purchased in 1933 by Andrea Mantengoli’s grandfather. In 1988, his father bottled his first vintage of Brunello di Montalcino. A new winery was completed in 2006 and the estate earned its organic farming certification in 2010. Despite bad weather years, La Serena has never skipped a vintage of Brunello di Montalcino.”
Only 7 Brunelli rated higher than this one per James Suckling in his report of the 2019 vintage and those are priced way, WAY higher than this… explaining “It’s certainly easier to make wines that show the character of vineyards in a vintage like 2019 with such freshness and balance.”
How about Antonio Galloni’s Vinous you may ask? They join the raves with “Buckle Your Seatbelts: I’m happy to report that the current releases from 2019 Montalcino are an embarrassment of riches for collectors and fans of the appellation.”
Per Decanter these wines are “an immense pleasure to taste… There is no doubt that 2019 is a superb vintage. I was struck by the gorgeous and immediate aroma profiles, the ripeness without excess, and the balance of richness with freshness. They do not fatigue the palate and are often stealthy in their power… Given the quality in 2019, Brunello enthusiasts will be spoiled for choice.”
We make that choice easy for you. While this is our first 2019 Brunello offer, there are just a few more select ones in the pipeline, and none we fear could top this deal.
Back the ‘camion’ up!
97 Points – James Suckling
“Aromas of bark, dark cherries and flowers, too. It’s medium- to full-bodied with purity of fruit that runs the length of the wine. It goes on for minutes. Very fine tannins. From organically grown grapes. Needs three or four years to completely come together, but gorgeous. Drink after 2026.”
95 Points – Wine Spectator
“There’s a fruity side to this red as well as a spicy side, with cherry, strawberry and black pepper flavors throughout. Floral, iron and underbrush accents add depth, yet it’s the beam of pure cherry that prevails. Shows prodigious length on the finish. Best from 2027 through 2043.”
