The Deering Ranch, home to the Deering Vineyard, is comprised of 106 acres of agricultural property that stretches through the Mayacamas Mountains and is planted in wine grapes — Zinfandel, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Chardonnay. The vines are carefully tended to optimize quality, and that includes sustainable farming practices. The vineyards were planted only in brush areas, saving the beautiful old oak trees and maintaining a gentle balance of wildland with cultivated land. The Deering family sees farming as a privilege and understands the value of protecting the natural habitat for beneficial insects, owls, bats, foxes, deer, mountain lions, coyotes, and bears.
The rocky slopes of this Moon Mountain vineyard are comprised of volcanic basalt, shale, and sandstone bedrock. A varied terrain makes the location well suited to many varietals. The vines love the cool maritime influence and evening fog. The high elevation of Deering Ranch means the morning fog burns off early, allowing the grapes to bask in the warmth of long, sunny days.
The 2018 Vintage was only the second harvest from these very young CCOF, Certified Organic grapevines. Proprietor/winemaker David Scheidt, being the select few to have access to this tremendous fruit, followed a remontage (pump-over) schedule of 2 per day through primary fermentation until press-off on day 13, where the free-run and press were divided. Malolactic or secondary fermentation completed in the barrels by late December 2018. The oak treatment was 100% French Taransaud / Fouquet, 25% of the barrels being brand new. The wine spent 28 months in barrel before bottling unfined, unfiltered to preserve intensity and sense of place.
