Grown on one single acre of our 18-acre estate mountain vineyard at 2,200 feet elevation in rocky red volcanic soil. The vineyard is CCOF Organic and Demeter Biodynamic certified. On the ranch, we pursue a true biodynamic “closed system,” where biodynamic preparations are sourced primarily from our property. A picturesque aspect of this is our Scottish Highland cattle, which play an important role.
Lake County saw an early and slightly light 2015 harvest. A mild winter brought early bud break, followed by protracted bloom and unseasonably cool weather in spring contributing to small grape clusters with intense flavor and color profile. This hot, dry summer was the fourth year of drought which made the fruit from this vintage very concentrated and flavorful. Harvest was early September. Tonnage was lighter than usual; however, the quality of this vintage is stellar.
Deeply suffused and dense ruby color; floral notes of violet and rose with a finish of white pepper fill the nose with an elegantly complex fragrance. The juxtaposition of both black and red fruit is the perfect marriage, with notes of blackberry, raspberry, and blueberry. Finely integrated tannins provide the structure indicative of the varietal.
