Mission Codename To be Continoed
A world-class red rated 95 points twice!
A wine that is “very typical and focused.”
From perhaps the most loved Rioja producer there is.
And it can be yours for just… checks math…
$35?!
Not a mistake. Only a Rioja can deliver this awesomeness, and only Wine Spies can make it an extreme value.
And not just ANY Rioja - this is Reserva from Contino by the iconic CVNE. Again, LOWEST price in the country.
Easter Egg: You will find a surprise Rosé by CVNE here in the Store! A welcoming end of summer wine for sure.
Where were we? Oh yes, did we say BIG scores? And rightfully so. CVNE, or Compañía Vinícola del Norte de España is an institution. Die-hard Rioja fans know CVNE wines need time to evolve into their best version. And this Reserva has just hit its peak. OH, SO IRRESISTIBLE. Yet you can put it away since the winemaking is as traditional as it gets, they age gracefully for many years.
Wine Spectator raves “CVNE has refused to go to extremes, instead taking a measured approach to the struggle between tradition and innovation.” having crowned them with the “#1 Wine of the Year” award in 2013 for the “ability to balance past and future in such delicious harmony.”
Spot on.
Just hitting its stride, this delicacy is a fiery crimson. Stunning aromatics include dark ripe cherries, juicy cranberries, pomegranate molasses, espresso, and charcoal. One sip and you KNOW it’s Rioja with that unmistakable texture best described as liquid satin. The finale builds up the earthy side with dried herbs and mushrooms competing over lively berries, all lingering symphonically. A kiss of exotic spices calls for dishes that are similarly ethnic, like a lamb tagine with couscous.
Scoop up what you can as this WILL sell out! Then come back and geek out on “10 Things every wine lover should know about CVNE” here.
95 Points – Wine Enthusiast
“This deep-ruby-colored wine has a bouquet of black cherry, clove and butterscotch. It is surprisingly soft on the palate, with filigree tannins and flavors of ripe summer cherry, blackberry, milk chocolate, fennel bulb and violet.”
95 Points – James Suckling
“Black cherries with cedar and dried flowers, as well as dusty earth. It’s medium-to full-bodied with firm tannins that are long and polished. Lots of structure. Very typical and focused. Drinkable now, but better in 2024.”
