The Roman chapel in the village of Châteauneuf-du-Pape is named after Saint Théodoric, a priest from Antakya killed as a martyr by the Romans for refusing to renounce his faith. It is the oldest monument in the village, as proved by the frescos dating back to the 10th-11th century which decorate its walls. Saint Théodoric has always been an emblematic figure of the village and is celebrated by the villagers for whom he was the patron saint until 1892. Today, the Chapel hosts many art exhibitions throughout the year.
The 2015 Châteauneuf-du-Pape vintage was exceptional. After a warm and hot summer, some rainy periods enabled the grapes to achieve the ideal maturity. During the harvest (which was early), the wind regulated the excessive temperatures, preserving the aromas of the grapes. This ideal weather and healthy conditions make the 2015 vintage one of the most qualitative in recent years.
The terroir is defined by stony soil of quartz mixed with sandy red clay. The grapes are hand-picked and fully destemmed before fermentation. Each grape variety is fermented individually, and fermentation/maceration lasts for approximately 4 weeks. After about 12 months of maturing, the different varieties, which were aged partly in oak and partly in vat, are combined to form the final blend before bottling.
A rich, bright ruby color with a subtle and complex nose of spices and garrigue. The palate is full and structured with spicy and dark-fruit flavors (prune and cherry) complemented by smooth, silky tannins on the finish. Enjoy this Châteauneuf du Pape at 16°C with grilled lamb chops or “Provençale” veal. It can be enjoyed already and up to 10 years of age.
