The Cabernet is from two Sonoma Valley AVA vineyards. Amaro Vineyard, on the upper slopes of the Sugarloaf Ridge overlooking the valley from the east. The second one is the Ivy Glen Vineyard, which is on the upper slopes of Sonoma Mountain overlooking the valley from the west. They are a perfect match, producing well-structured mountain Cabernet, the best.
The flavor profile is true to the Sonoma style. It’s big wine with finance and layered complexity. It fills every corner of the palate, the Cabernet down the center from front to back with cedar cigar box, leather and black cherries ending in a long finish. The Malbec fills in the bottom back with blackberries. The Merlot adds a floral entry and enhances the nose. The Cabernet Franc fills in the top of your palate with dark chocolate, giving the blend lift. The Petit Sirah adds spice n the center and accentuates fruit from the other varietals. Petit Verdot fills in the bottom front like spices and licorice. It is a symphony in a glass, poetry that you can drink.
The 2013 vintage, the best since 2007, produced powerful Cabernets that promise to be exceptionally long lived. We blended this Cabernet in 2016 after more than two years of aging of the components in French and American oak barrels in our cave. We bottled half of it in 2018, after an additional two years in the barrel. We left half in the barrel for an additional year, for a total of 5 years and 3 months. During this extended aging, we lost about 25% to the angel’s share while monitored, topped, and tasted the barrels regularly. It’s a labor of love, an art form. You’ll taste a depth and uniqueness of flavor that can be achieved no other way. Enjoy.
