Mission Codename Oh Mon Dieu
Say it with us, More Meffre! More Meffre! More Meffre!
How about a practically untouchable $16 bargain! From Plan de Dieu nonetheless, one of the most talked-about up and coming sub-appellations in the Southern Rhône, oh Mon Dieu as the French say.
A happy as can be Jeb Dunnuck back in his Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate days raved: “As for the 2015 vintage, this is certainly a very, very good vintage for the entire Southern Rhône Valley. The reds are full-bodied and show beautiful purity of fruit, good concentration and notable, yet ripe and rounded tannin structures. Moreover, the quality is incredibly high across all of the appellations, and even across all varieties, which is uncommon… a beautiful vintage for Southern Rhône lovers that will be a treasure trove for the actual wine drinkers out there.”
Of the dozens we go through, we cannot think of a better example at this BEYOND FAIR price point than this.
Meffre started in 1936 as a négociant, and by the time of his passing in 1987, he had amassed 900 hectares of prime Rhône vineyards. Interesting side note - his daughter owns another hugely respected winery - Vaudieu. Yes, the winemaking roots run deep for this family. And of course, like any top Rhône producer, they sought the help of Philippe Cambie to level up their quality. Cambie is like a winemaking prophet, a Grenache wizard; he’s the guy winemakers call on to reach their highest potential. He is to the Rhône what Michel Rolland is to Bordeaux or Bill Belichick is to NFL coaching.
Yet another incredible value from Gabriel Meffre once again overdelivering big time!
Wine Spectator
“This has red and black licorice notes coiled around the core of lightly steeped plum and raspberry fruit, all backed by slightly brambly grip on the finish.”
Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate
“A solid, well-made and medium-bodied drinker that has darker fruits, ground herbs and hints of earth. Supple, fruity and balanced, it’s perfect for mid-week drinking.”
