Mission Codename Without breaking the bank
Did you miss the Salvestrin?
No worries because we have an equally compelling Cab from an even more venerable vineyard - Beckstoffer Georges III.
It is, in a word “energetic” as Wine Advocate noted in their 95-point review.
And so is our price, at an even HALF OFF.
Beckstoffer’s Georges III Vineyard was established by Georges de Latour (of Beaulieu Vineyards fame) in 1928 and soon tended by none other than the legendary André Tchelistcheff. Today the famous site in Rutherford is a breeding ground for some of the world’s top Cabs for the likes of Schrader, Purlieu, Myriad as well as many others. And the prices routinely soar well above $200 into the $600+ realm.
At Krutz, they do all the right things. Hand-picked fruit from exceptional vineyards. New French Oak fermenters from Taransaud. Gravity-fed, free-run-only juice into the most expensive barrels that smell and taste toasty and rich, just how you like it. They spare no expense and routinely get well-deserved scores in the 95-100 range.
Even more so than the Salvestrin, this shows off a classic, deeply endowed, and structured style of Napa Cab. Round, creamy, and brimming with dark black fruit, minerality, and sturdy tannins. Dark black and red fruit. PILES, stacks, loads of it. Scrooge McDuck type richness. We’re talking dark cocoa dusted cherries, warm blueberry jam. Violets and crème de cassis! Sandalwood, fresh pipe tobacco, and vanilla bean. Complex as heck, just a massive display of opulent fruit with fine tannins and a lengthy finish.
Just to reiterate, this is a GIII - delegated by Wine & Spirits as one of the “Most Important California Vineyards All Wine Lovers Need to Know.” because, they wrote “It takes a lot of expertise and ingenuity to concoct the definitive Cabernet, but to keep the quality going strong over generations like Georges III has - that’s a whole other thing. Getting your hands on bottles of George III typically means breaking the bank.”
Oh, and lastly…
9 barrels made with a fraction of that allocated, don’t let this go by without claiming your share.
95+ Points – Jeb Dunnuck
“The star of the show is the 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer Georges III Vineyard, a rich, full-bodied, structured wine that’s going to reward bottle age. All Cabernet Sauvignon that was fermented in oak tanks and aged 22 months in 90% new French oak, it has beautiful red, blue, and black fruits, notes of tobacco leaf, chocolate, damp earth, and woodsmoke, firm, building tannins, and a great finish. Hide bottles for at least 4-5 years, and it will evolve for 20+. Drink 2026-2046.”
95 Points – Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate
“The 2019 Krutz Family Cellars Beckstoffer Georges III Vineyard is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon. Displaying a deep garnet-purple color, it needs a fair bit of swirling to unlock its beautifully pure notes of crushed black cherries and wild blueberries with hints of menthol and tilled soil. The medium to full-bodied palate is solidly structured with firm, fine-grained tannins, supporting the intense earth and black fruit layers, finishing long and energetic. 241 cases were made. Drink 2023-2049.”
