Mission Codename Scarlett red
We HAD TO pinch ourselves… a legendary library vintage gem made by a Grand Cru Classé? One surrounded by Smith-Haut-Lafitte, Larrivet-Haut-Brion, and Domaine de Chevalier? Overseen by THE Michel Rolland too?!
Brought to you at $33?!
40% OFF? Wow, just wow.
Pessac-Léognan’s top 2015s are through the roof in value today. Haut-Brion is $800-ish, and La Mission is trending in the $500s. A bottle, those are. A CASE of this? Under $400! How is that for value?
Per Wikipedia the history here is deep, as “Domaine de Lagravière was bought in 1803 by Pierre de Malartic whose uncle, Comte de Malartic through battles against the British in Canada and Mauritius brought fame to the name and the maritime theme which is associated with this estate.” Well, that’s 221 years of legacy winemaking folks…
Decanter catches up with this “absolute powerhouse in the appellation, now rivaling its biggest names” with “reds that are unmissable, and that Malartic particularly have begun to rival the most elegant, concentrated, and complex Bordeaux – think Rauzan-Ségla, Haut-Bailly, and La Gaffelière in terms of style and philosophy. What helps with this is the layer of limestone that sits under the deep gravel. Once they had stopped the intensive vineyard treatments and began manually working the soils, the roots were able to reach down to this layer, and the pH lowered, bringing a natural freshness.”
Oh, and don’t go seeking this ‘Sillage’ elsewhere, it’s a tiny spinoff we were able to secure for you exclusively, a 3rd label of sorts, 2nd to none, a chip of the ole ‘Grand Vin’ block, for sure, over which, Vinous for one went gaga: “just as fabulous from bottle as it was from barrel, it’s positively thrilling each of the three times I tasted it…” Antonio Galloni wrote, calling it “a total rock star, deep, powerful and exotic, the 2015 sweeps across the palate with stunning richness and intensity… another stellar showing from the Bonnie family and consultant Michel Rolland. Don’t miss it!”
Alas, if you missed “it” fret not, here’s a slightly turned-down version of all that, cut off the same cloth!
Brought in every bottle they let us, but will it last the day?
92 Points – James Suckling
“Striking violets and blueberries here. Some leafy notes, too. The palate adds some light, creamy oak, tastes of summer-berry pudding and supple tannins to close. Drink or hold.”
90 Points – Decanter
“Extremely generous in its fruit structure. It’s loaded with brambles and cassis, even if a little more heat is evident through the palate. This has a lovely gourmet touch with caramel edging, and if you’re looking for a wine to drink soon, this is the one to go for.”
