Ooowee! Do you like your red’s rich like Buffet, large like Albert, and round like Violet Beauregard?
What about priced way under $30? With 93 points by the world’s foremost expert on the region?
Well, we have a treat for you today. Warwick Estate is a stalwart in the South Hemisphere wine scene. Their history goes back to 1771, and they have made wines for almost two hundred years. These are the wines Neal Martin of Vinous must have had in mind when he wrote “South Africa is frankly unbeatable in terms of quality-to-price ratio.” And if you had their ‘Blue Lady’ Cab, or their flagship Estate Reserve we sold last year, you already know that’s the truth.
Take it from Jancis Robinson who in a recent Financial Times article titled “Cape crusaders: South African wine on a roll” singled Warwick out, stressing that “the great attraction of South African wine for many consumers is the value it offers.”
Pitch Black is exactly what you get here. This Left Bank Styled Cabernet blend packs oodles of fruit - all types of crushed red berries - cherry and raspberry - with black plum and blueberry pulling up to the party as well. A hint of mint and rosemary spices, supple leather and toasty oak find their way into the mix. It’s not thick or heavy - but rather bright and juicy. New World in style, and easily mistaken for a California wine. But you’d be hard pressed to find one that hits this level of quality for the same price. We’re picky about South African wines, but this won our unanimous approval in a big way. You will be smiling after the first sip.
We mean if you put this in Napa or Pauillac you’d be paying 3-5 times more kinda QPR.
Expand your horizons and adopt a few of these. For this price - you’ll be happy you did.
93 Points – Platter’s Wine Guide
“Beautiful bright purple in colour. Strawberries and blue berries jump out of the glass with the initial nose, followed by rosemary and hints of spice. The palate is medium bodied with fine tannins, drink over the next 3-7 years.”
