One of the most storied and acclaimed wineries of Washington state, Spring Valley Vineyard is situated 12 miles northeast of the city of Walla Walla. It was planted in 1993 by the Corkrum-Derby family, who have farmed in the Walla Walla Valley for more than 150 years. Frederick honors the second-generation son of the founder Uriah, a formative figure who helped shape this illustrated winery’s legacy.

Like the handsome and strong farm-boy it’s named after, what’s in the glass glows and shines with intensity and complexity. While robust and rich, it manages to dial back midway with savory-sweet fruit and oak nuances. What other 95-pointer Cab from Napa or elsewhere can you think of that over-deliver’s like this does, especially at our rock bottom while it lasts $28?! We can’t imagine one.

“A blend of 93% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Syrah, and 2% Malbec aged 19 months in 40% new oak, the 2016 Frederick Red Wine is another classic, beautifully balanced, age-worthy wine from this estate that has lots of blackcurrant, leafy tobacco, and damp earth-like aromas and flavors. With a seamless, texture, it shows the style of the estate. It will benefit from 2-4 years of bottle age and keep for 20 years or more. Drink 2022-2042.”

“Winemaker Serge Laville was happy to present his 2016 reds this year, even if he thought they were still a bit tight after a year in bottle. He described the vintage as much better than average, with plenty of time to pick at the right time. Bright, dark red. Brooding, slightly medicinal scents of black cherry and menthol lifted by flowers. The densest and sweetest of these 2016s, but conveys a youthfully brooding quality to its flavors of red and black fruits, menthol and spices. Finishes classically dry, with substantial firm but ripe tannins and the density to support an extended life in bottle. (a different blend from normal, featuring an unusually high percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon, most of it from blocks planted in 2006, 2001 and 1999). Drink 2022-2030.”
