Again, “Italy’s Parker” Luca Maroni gave this ultra-QPR example a mighty high 98 for good reason, we can’t stop chugging it. With a wood-burning oven pie oozing with mozzarella, it’s a quick trip to heaven and back for just 22 bucks.

The gorgeous modern La Bollina winery is in Piedmont, while for projects like this, they pull fruit from the southernmost ends of the boot, and the result is a superbly crafted red with a Mediterranean flair.

Andrea Bernardini is La Bollina’s consultant, a veteran winemaker known to blend traditional winemaking with modern techniques, and indigenous varietals with international ones. He cut his teeth at Poggio Bonelli & Ruffino in Tuscany after graduating from the University of Pisa - (NOT pizza, ha, ha!) - one of the best winemaking schools in Italy. Sour red cherries, blackcurrant, violet, and lavender resonate with the perfume. The palate is dense, sweet, and complex, with very pure smoky berry, mineral, plum, tar, and Oriental spices conveying a refined, plush quality. The finish is long and pure, with mineral and floral notes repeating. A wine of remarkable balance and finesse, pulling that neat trick of being powerful and concentrated yet refined and sophisticated simultaneously. Absolutely gorgeous juice, with or without pizza. Mkay, with, please.
