Mission Codename Finally 21
Of the THOUSANDS of bottles being poured at Vinexpo America 2022 ONE was a clear standout.
THIS - an age-defying 2001 Rioja brought us to our knees. Then we heard the price and damn near went into a fit of convulsions. UNDER $30? Naturally, we JUMPED on all we could to lock down this US exclusive offer for you.
Then we learned why this wine was so special. That same week the prestigious international Mundus Vini 2022 judging awarded it ”Best of Show” with a Grand Gold medal on top. Basically, it’s a perfect showing. Vintage Rioja recognized as one of the best on earth.
And it’s here. Today. Only at Wine Spies, for over 60% OFF.
No wonder 2001, according to Vinous is one of the greatest Rioja vintages ever, with 96 points when *“Exceptional wines were made, many of which are still drinking beautifully. The wines, which benefited from a long, hot and dry summer are concentrated and well-balanced, with complex bouquets and they display a harmonious interplay of fruit, acidity and tannins. One of the great vintages of the 20th century.” This quote comes from a 2019 drinkability update by the way.
And what’s in the glass? Pretty much exactly that. Dried figs and red currants, worn leather and cloves, figs and vanilla with a sturdy oak backbone. If collectibles like López de Heredia or Marqués de Murrieta (aka “the Rioja aristocracy” per Jancis Robinson) mean anything to you, this is your next new discovery. Heck, if you dig ANY mature red wine, you OWE yourself a case. No regrets, guaranteed!
Oh, and you’ll recall Manzanos from this gem here in the Store we featured not too long ago, with a few cases remaining. The Bodega started in 1890, and today brothers Victor and David along with David’s wife Laura run the show and they’ve transformed it into a modern powerhouse. While that 97 pointer is a broader, oakier, riper take, for drinking today we prefer this 2001, nuff said.
Here today, gone tomorrow.
