Mission Codename A different corner
Say!
I like Viognier.
I do! I like it today.
I would drink it on a boat.
And I would drink it with a goat.
If only Dr. Seuss wrote a famous book about this often-overlooked white grape. More people might try it. Then again, we sold out of the similarly excellent 2020 last year, so maybe the secret is out…
Like its sellout predecessor, this earned 92 points from Wine Enthusiast and at 30% OFF it gets us right in the feels. Complex, balanced, beautifully textured, and tasty as heck.
We’ll drink it when it’s 105 out, or in winter, with a hot dog and kraut.
Sorry. Ahem. Let’s get serious for a minute.
This comes from a small family winery, and they simply crush it every vintage. Harvested from Catie’s Corner Vineyard, which is owned by the Kunde Family and farmed by the Duttons. The same vineyard appears on prominent labels like Copain & Joseph Swan. Whetstone, DRNK, and SoMa Cellars are some of the names who make a Viognier from here too - each one priced higher than what you can get this one for today.
It’s popping with orange blossoms and white peach. Dripping with honey, zipping with lemon curd, and pumping full of apricot-fig jam. It has a little weight, and that classic Viognier mouthfeel - somewhat oily and viscous – yet vibrant acidity keeps everything in check, making it the ideal companion for your roast chicken weekday extravaganza, especially if citrus, garlic, and aromatic herbs are involved.
As this bottle comes to an end - and believe us when we say it goes down easy - we say it’s 100% worth the $40 the winery is asking as it would put many a Condrieu in the $100s to shame. At our price? It’s a REEDONKULOUS steal of a fine ABC (Anything But Chardonnay) lover’s white.
Do yourself a favor and be among the savvy Ops who take some home while you can. You’ll know you made a good call when it hits your tongue.
92 Points – Wine Enthusiast
“Spicy aromatics and a lasting hint of honeysuckle make this white inviting on the nose, leading to a balanced, complex, and viscous palate of good flavor and texture. Strong fig flavors give it a sumptuousness and lasting richness that is met by moderate acidity.”
