Mission Codename "I'm Wolf's Head. I solve problems."
And the next WIA goes to… the BEST NAPA CAB UNDER $50!
(well, okay, that’s kinda cheating maybe as we squeezed it way down to $44 from well over $50)
We go through A LOT of Napa Cab here. It’s very, very rare that we hit this kind of pedigree, and CULT status winemaking from grapes that lived a life better than the late Queen.
The kind that Wine Advocate calls “wines with compelling precision and poise and with just enough unbridled decadence to make you wonder.”
“So, are we sending The Wolf for one last time??”
On that fateful day, Noir had hung up the phone and broke out a random Zeb Ross style crib walk. High fives went all around. After months of trying, the deal was secured!
Many of you already know about the Wolf’s Head.
It had been over EIGHTEEN months since we last offered it, but that changes today. If you’re among the uninitiated, here’s a prime-time cult Napa value before your very eyes.
Cameron Woodbridge (brother of Hundred ‘Jayson’ Acre) makes some kick-ass wines. Now, being a brother of a superstar winemaker doesn’t automatically qualify you in any way but as a past Wine Advocate review noted “clearly winemaking talent runs in the family, and yet his style is clearly his own…”
It has all the hallmarks of a primetime, big ballin’, shot-callin’ Napa Cabernet. Rockstar winemaker. Prime Calistoga fruit. Exquisite packaging. And we got a kick-ass price. It’s already a fairly good deal at $70. With a nearly 40% break, it turns into a stupendous world’s-lowest-price type of deal.
All it’s missing is that stomach-churning triple-digit price tag.
Cameron worked alongside Jayson and Philippe Melka, who consulted for Hundred Acre at the time, starting in 2005. He honed his skills and broke out on his own to make a comparably opulent, hedonistic, high-scoring Cabernet. He’s also the one behind the ever-popular Stormy Weather we’ve sold.
If so, you know the style he puts out. It ticks all the boxes you like in a Napa Cab. Rich, warm, ripe, earthy, spicy. A smattering of figs, blackberries, and black cherries. A mixtape of fresh tobacco leaf, cedar, and other toasty woody notes. A crescendo of chocolate ganache all leading into a marathon finish that goes on and on.
Oh, saved the best news for last, we also got a small stash of his hugely popular PORT - a brand new to us 2014 vintage - here in the Store.
All that’s left to say is this: how many can you fit into your Locker? Fill it up and ship it out!
91+ Points – Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate
“If you have a choice, reach for the Wolf’s Head 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon, as it’s richer and deeper than the 2017, with beautifully integrated cedar, cassis and black cherry notes. Full-bodied, rich and velvety, it’s nicely done and a solid value, even if it may be a touch warm on the finish. Drink 2022-2033.”
