The 2019 growing season started with more winter rain water in the ground than the previous season, but not enough to end the drought. The spring was cool and the summer was relatively mild, but fall saw more heat spikes, which concentrated sugars slightly. Although tonnage levels were solid and the season long, harvest finished slightly earlier than the previous year.
The cooler marine influences from the San Pablo bay give the Chardonnay grapes layered, delicate flavors. The grapes develop slowly, while still taking advantage of the intensity from growing at elevation. On the nose, the finished wine has aromas of white peach and nectarines, quince, with hints of savory sage and native California chaparral. On the palate, there is a nice mineral tension, with a hint of pickled ginger, which rolls into a round, well balanced mid-palate and a creamy finish.
