Mission Codename Sir Mix-a-Lot
Is your body ready to receive this TRIPLE 94 point Tuscan brilliance? From the epic 2016 vintage? At THIS price?
The retail on this RARE stunner sits at $130 in just one shop out there…
From us, at 65% off that? That’s $45. A remarkable deal on a must-try, one-of-a-kind Super-Tuscan made from 36 clonal varieties of Sangiovese. There’s nothing else like it.
Philip Mazzei was born in 1730 and lived a profoundly influential life with widespread interests. He traveled extensively and even helped Thomas Jefferson develop his vineyard. And Castello di Fonterutoli has a rich history making wine in the heart of Chianti Classico. The estate has been in the hands of the Mazzei family since 1435!! That’s 26 generations making wine!
We recently offered their “Siepi” Toscana - a stunning 98-point rendition - and this, for a much lower price delivers a similarly impressive package. Right up front it dishes out bright red fruits and is considerably forward on the palate. But heaps of complexity surround the core of fruit - wild herbs, black plum, wood spice, licorice and bittersweet chocolate raspberry nibs. The lively juiciness and layers upon layers of fruit and spice on its long finish make it an ideal food wine. As Tom Hyland highlights for Forbes with his “outstanding” remarks, “it’s a very well-made wine that most consumers would enjoy with a veal chop, sirloin or pasta with Bolognese sauce.”
Mmm…
We wish there was more to spare but with 8,000 bottles made for the entire world, we’re happy to have any.
Outstanding! – Tom Hyland, Forbes
“Enter a relatively new wine, known as “Mix 36,” this red from family vineyards in the Chianti Classico district, is one of the more original wines made in the last decade from this ancient territory. The “36” refers to 36 biotypes of the Sangiovese variety, the signature red grape of this zone and of Tuscany as a whole. The family planted an experimental vineyard in the late 1990s with 36 different types of Sangiovese, including various clones as well as 18 massal selections (cuttings from some of the best estate vineyards). It’s a unique project, one that aims to discover the true DNA or identity of Sangiovese. The 2016 is the current release, and the wine is immediately recognizable for its Tuscan as well as its Sangiovese identity. Beyond that, it’s a very well-made wine that most consumers would enjoy with a veal chop, sirloin or pasta with Bolognese sauce. Aromas of vanilla, red cherry, oregano and red pepper. Medium-full with excellent depth of fruit, rich, young tannins, distinct red spice notes in the finish and good acidity. Somewhat modern in style, with excellent complexity and structure. A fascinating wine that only hints at what is to come, as far as greater complexity and length. Best in 7-10 years.”
94 Points – Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate
“I am always fascinated by this wine, made with a blend of 36 biotypes of Sangiovese from an experimental plot at the Fonterutoli property. The 2016 Mix 36 (with 8,000 bottles produced) shows classic Sangiovese lines with wild berry, cassis, smoke, tar and moist earth. There are delicate floral notes with wild rose and pressed violets that show with greater intensity in this balanced vintage. The wine ages in 500-liter barrels for 18 months. Drink 2019-2035.”
94 Points – James Suckling
“A beautiful Tuscan red that shows fresh red cherries, blueberries, boysenberries, fresh herbs, citrus and orange peel. So elegant and dialed-in on the palate, which is medium-bodied with savory undertones and bucket loads of tangy acidity. Sexy. Drink now.”
94 Points – Fallstaff International
“Rich ruby red colour. It has fine savoury notes on the nose, pleasant woodiness, wild berries and redcurrant. On the palate it is hearty and juicy, with fine texture, elegant red berry fruit, good length and a powerful finish.”
