Mission Codename Cellar Stocker #9
Cellar Stocker: Cult Wines Beyond Napa Edition Continues…
One more Vérité! You can’t get much higher on the cult wine totem pole. There’s a reason why they call it that because it’s THE TRUTH.
Hearts go pitter-patter once again for a double 99-point stunner. Just between those two reviewers they have like 50 plus 99-100 scores. And we have the best price in America again?! There’s more than enough substance in the pros’ words, so we’ll just leave it at this: a singularly stunning wine.
Robert Parker goes on record with “This winery, one of the gems of the Kendall-Jackson portfolio of boutique wineries, debuted in 1998 and has been hitting on all cylinders since. I suspect top priority is given to Bordelais winemaker Pierre Seillan’s choice of the finest fruit he can find from Jackson’s holdings in Alexander Valley, Chalk Hill and Knights Valley. There are three Bordeaux-inspired cuvées made, with La Muse the Right Bank Pomerol style of wine dominated by Merlot, La Joie a Médoc-like blend dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon, and Le Désir a St.-Émilion-oriented wine dominated by Cabernet Franc. Percentages of these principal grapes all change with the vintage, but those varieties are clearly the strength of each cuvée. Kudos once again to Pierre Seillan!”*
Pure liquid luxury. And we have just a handful of bottles.
99 Points – Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate
“Composed of 82% Cabernet Franc, 12% Merlot and 6% Malbec, the very deep purple-black colored 2016 Le Désir is a little closed to begin, opening out to reveal absolutely stunning scents of potpourri, roses and orange peel over a core of crushed blackcurrants, black cherries and dark chocolate with touches of cinnamon stick and cloves plus a waft of forest floor. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is exquisitely delicate and refined, with super ripe, fine-grained tannins and wonderful freshness, finishing with epic persistence. Drink 2022-2047.”
99 Points – Jeb Dunnuck
“The 2016 Le Desir checks in as 82% Cabernet Franc, 12% Merlot, and 6% Malbec. Readers looking for world-class Cabernet Franc should beg, borrow, or steal to get hold of a bottle of this. Incredible floral, violet, forest floor, lead pencil, and cassis notes all flow to a medium to full-bodied red that’s flawlessly balanced, has ultra-fine tannins, and a finish that won’t quit. More intellectual and elegant than the La Joie, it’s still a wine of incredible intensity and class that builds incrementally on the palate, has an exotic, singular character, and the class to evolve for 30 years or more. Drink 2019-2049”
