Mission Codename View from the top
Wait, I KNOW this wine exclaimed Agent Noir, he swore he had it before.
But did he?
One more whiff and another sip took him right to another 2018 Santenay 1er Cru we featured not too long ago.
And that’s no coincidence because we’re looking at THAT very same Jacques Girardin’s SON, who does give a big hand to his dad too, AND makes his own wines from vineyards just a stone’s throw away. So, the signature winemaking style and classic terroir nuances are almost identical here. Just like the equally impeccable wines of Jacques’ more famous brother and Justin’s uncle Vincent Girardin. The Girardins sure know how to make some fine Burgundy top to bottom, they’ve been at it for over 5 centuries!
We’re in pastoral Santenay again… just northeast of the tiny village, the 1er Cru vineyard of Beauregard is a gorgeous plot that lives up to its name that means “with a beautiful view” in French, as it overlooks Chassagne-Montrachet.
Insane deals in red Burgundy can come from Santenay these days as the climate and soils of neighboring Chassagne-Montrachet, once also famous for its Pinot Noirs can be found here too. Wine Spectator explains: “Santenay got a bad rap. Just a modest jog away from the legendary Burgundy vineyards of Montrachet, the wine village was long considered a backwater… Though stereotypes and habits don’t die easily, good Santenay is good Burgundy. Change that to good value Burgundy. In the 21st century, Santenay has produced more than 50 wines rated 90 points or higher in Wine Spectator blind tastings.”
SO. MUCH. FRUIT. Are we really in Burgundy? A mild streak of sleek dusty earth and minerals assure so, while heaps of red berries, as in strawberry and raspberry dominate the aromas and flavors. Juicy cherry accents rush in for a prolonged finish with sappy lemongrass and a touch of candied licorice. This stylish and forward loveliness is ideal for elaborate cheese and charcuterie boards with a sourdough baguette, or your favorite rich and creamy winter soups.
Did we say only 2 barrels were imported?
Pinot people! This superb value is overflowing with glorious irresistibility, you will LOVE it.
92 Points – Wine Enthusiast
“A hint of aromatic raspberry accompanies the more obvious red-cherry notes on the nose of this wine. The palate brims with freshness and has juicy crunchiness at its cherry core. The wine is fresh-faced, honest but also firm, which is evident in the structured finish.”
