Mission Codename Rock of the Leap
– MAGNUMS SOLD OUT, SORRY - Few 750s Remain…–
“Luck favors the prepared.”
Wise words Mr. Pasteur! No luck needed, really, when you’re on our list though. You already knew that. Especially after the past few weeks. Whew!
Still, we must have some bit of fortune on our side, a repository of karma or just some tight connections to land a freshly released, 94-pointer from one of Napa’s most respected wineries - Chimney Rock.
At a discount? Unreal. Even the big shots, who buy MOUNTAINS of this stuff (hint, one rhymes with “so dull”) can’t offer it at rock bottom pricing.
Chimney Rock is a stalwart in Napa’s Cabernet scene, a fixture on the Silverado Trail, and well known for its precise, powerful, and expressive wines. Galloni says that the “2018s are some of the most beautiful, expressive wines I have tasted from Elizabeth Vianna”. Wine Enthusiast gave it a “Cellar Selection” designation in their 94-point review. We simply described it simply as “ass-kickin’ good” juice when we opened a Magnum at our recent office BBQ.
Incredibly young, this stuff comes BELLOWING a deep core of blue and black fruit right out the gate. Blackberry, blueberry, cassis, and a twist of sandalwood spice, toasty oak, and powerful but soft tannins carry the party into your mouth with a finish that goes into the after-hours. Give this puppy some air to breathe, or better yet, stash it until… any year up to and after 2040!! Snagged some Mags too? Those will go even further.
On their own website, they list their competitors as Shafer One Point Five, Far Niente, Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars, and Silver Oak but at our price, it blows all competition out of the water.
What are you waiting for? Treat yourself!
94 Points, Cellar Selection – Wine Enthusiast
“Silky red fruit and plum dot the landscape of this powerfully soft and velvety wine. Blended with 23% Merlot and 1% each of Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc, it exudes classic structure, integrated oak and floral beauty, finishing on a fig note. Enjoy from 2028-2032.”
92 Points – Antonio Galloni’s Vinous
“The 2018s are some of the most beautiful, expressive wines I have tasted from Elizabeth Vianna. Over the last few years, the Chimney Rock Cabernets have gained in precision… The more restrained approach seems especially well suited here, where the range centers around a number of small production wines from different clones and/or blocks within one property. The 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Stags Leap District Estate is rich, ample and so inviting. This creamy, expressive Cabernet is sure to delight readers pretty much upon release. It captures all the charm of the vintage in its gracious personality. Hints of spice, tobacco, dried herbs and mint linger. Drink 2023-2038.”
