Mission Codename Sorcerer of Syrah!
Whoa. That Grenache went POOF! All sold out as predicted…
Yet fear not! Skinner is back for the day with an equally compelling, equally affordable Syrah!
Winemaker Chris Pittenger happens to be the genius behind these highly explosive fruit bombs, with stints at Marcassin, Williams-Selyem, Robert Biale, and Turley! Which makes him an invincible superhero of sorts. Untouchable reputation, undeniable pedigree, unquestionable mastery.
Skinner too is a winner, winner of Wine Business Monthly’s “Top 10 Hot Brands” and often seen at the Wine & Spirits Top-100 as the hip, family-run operation up in the Sierra Foothills. The story goes… Kevin Skinner and his wife randomly stumbled upon an epic piece of family history on their way to Lake Tahoe. After a little research, Kevin’s father Mike traced Skinner Winery to his great, great, great grandpa! They went all in and purchased the property with one purpose in mind - reviving the legacy.
And just how good is this Syrah? It’s beyond compare actually. Seriously, where else but from El Dorado can you get all this wine for just $17, thanks to the insane deal we got of course, but still at $30, it was a steal, given the way it brings the Old World closer to the New.
A deep ruby to purple turns deeper, almost opaque in the sangria core. The nose offers up blackberries galore, along with the telltale black pepper and olive aromatics of the best examples of this varietal. The palate is medium- to full-bodied, with Paso-like intensity yet dialing back with fresh acidity that livens up the ripe black cherries and boysenberry jam nuances. The finish clings long, with hints of earth, leather, and game bringing in serious complexity to a ridiculous value. This is your lamb chops accompaniment, with a mint sauce, served alongside a spiced-up couscous with dried fruits and nuts.
This too is bound to not last long. If you have room for JUST ONE California Syrah left in your Locker, or your stash wherever else you keep the good juice - THIS IS THE ONE.
