OK, let’s dive in.

For starters, you could never find this in Napa/Sonoma, even Lake! Sorry - love it around here and much respect for the region but that’s the truth. Calaveras County though? Turns out you can get some real deal Cab up there in Gold Country Sierra Foothills. They’ve been making premium wines since the 1990s at Broll Mountain Vineyards, churning out just 1,000 cases or less a year from their thirteen organically farmed, high elevation acres.

Tons of Cab comes through our tasting panel, Operatives. And we’re super discerning, as you may have witnessed time and again, not letting a Cab through to your eyes until we fully believe in it. And strike a deal that is worthy of your precious time and attention. Especially if it is the random, unknown, vintage Cab. It really must rise to the occasion and show off its stuff. This curious discovery definitely delivers the goods.

Ten years of age, yes, but you would never know from a blind taste. Still drinks astonishingly youthful. It has some of those tertiary nuances coming through, but there’s still so much ripe, rich fruit packed in here.

The color is still vivid ruby with just a touch of pale crimson peeking through the narrow circumference. The nose dishes out plenty of blackcurrant, and darker wild berries, with sunbaked herbs within. The mouthfeel has tons of concentration to offer through a cocoa powder texture with elements of ripe plum and cassis as the primary fruit drivers. The finish is collector-grade, complex, and way lengthy for the money. This must be the perfect go-to weekday Cab for any meal really, or just enjoy solo while catching the latest Jeopardy episode.

Zero press, as most wine writers don’t even know this stuff exists. Yet Wine Enthusiast back when for their 2005 vintage seems to have caught on to what captivated us, claiming that “Broll is showing some nice finesse here, even though it’s still stylistically a big wine. Its leathery, savory, and earthy notes really linger on the lengthy finish, all brick and tar and still, even after all this time in bottle, tight.” and that was a review back in 2011, a testament to the lasting power right before us.

Stack this one up from the windows to the walls! Or at least take a flyer on a few - perfect way to round out your near-full Locker!! Really not much to go around, so apologies if it’s gone too early.
