This wine is classic French-style Bordeaux - subtle, nuanced, and elegant. Deeply scented, with aromas of sweet, smoky oak, sage, and blackberry. On the palate, notes of blackberry, vanilla, and earth delight. Finish is long and velvety. Soft, dusty tannins provide structure.
The fruit for this unique blend was sourced from a small mountain vineyard above St. Helena, overlooking Lake Hennessey in the Napa Valley. Rocky, red volcanic soils and sensitive farming practices lend depth and complexity to this wine. The blend is, rather like its name, an act of spontaneity – or sua sponte!
The 2013 vintage will be remembered as one of the greatest vintages in decades. Spring was slightly cooler than normal. Temperatures on the mountain vineyard above St. Helena evolved into a beautiful, warm summer. There was one single rainstorm, but this did not impact our hearty red varietals. A few days with temperatures above 100 degrees allowed for the development of deep color and rich, flavorful tannins.
This wine was a family collaboration, with our Founding Partner, David Boies, taking the lead. We handcrafted each of the wines for the final blend separately and then determined the final blend after many trials. The resulting wine is, like all our classic red wines, fashioned to pair with food, exhibiting balance and complexity.
